“In my studio there might be five or six paintings of a size and I work on these at the same time and cover perhaps five or six different directions. I’m interested in carrying on the issues and problems of previous pictures. Quite often you have a leap-frogging of concerns that goes on within what you may call a ‘spoke’ system - you work from the idle outwards and then circle the boundaries”.
